An open letter to SyFy execs

Tue Mar 17, 2009, 5:08 AM
For those of you not in the know, SciFi Network is going to re-brand itself as SyFy in order to distance itself from the geeky fanbase which has been so loyal to the 16 year old network over the years. We have taken a lot of abuse, including the cancellation of many terrific shows, being bombarded by idiotic made for TV movies and of course the wrestling. I am posting this on numerous forums including SciFi, but I have no doubt it will be taken down very soon.

So you're finally changing your name? Well its about time I would say. The once awesome idea and channel that had a purpose, a mission statement, a clear target audience and a meaning died a long time ago. Unfortunately the shell of the once proud channel continued to live on, like some kind of soulless automaton or zombie, the channel had the crude semblance of life, but it had become an abomination to what it once was.

Your programing shows a complete lack of faith in everything that caused SciFi to come into existence in the first place. Imagine if you will if the Food Network despised food, or people who ate food, and the people who called themselves foodies. Imagine for one moment that the Food Network decided to distance themselves from this group and rename themselves Fud Network, or some other ridiculous and meaningless moniker. As absurd as this sounds, this is precisely what you are doing. But perhaps what you are doing is for the best, because it will finally be a break from those whom you despise so much.

You have gone from a network who had commentary by Harlan Ellison, to a channel that shows wrestling. You have gone from a network who presented the best and the brightest ideas in the form of fiction, fact and fantasy to some kind of meaningless amalgamated goo which stumbles blindly for commercial representation like an aborted fetus who would not die.

SY Fy does fit your channel now perfectly. It has no purpose, no mission statement and no clear target audience. It is doomed to failure. SciFi died a long time ago, and I'm glad you are finally acknowledging this; I morn its death and I will remember it fondly. On the day that SyFy dies, I will celebrate and I will be joined by many an individual. We will collectively urinate on the grave of the mockery which is SyFy and the only tales told of it will be of the shuffling and idiotic guidance and creation by the executives who led it to this unwholesome and purposeless place.

SyFy will be on your tombstone, your obituary and your legacy for all time. It says, "Fuck you fans. We cast you off. We deny you."

Well let me tell you SyFy from one of your former long time fans.

FUCK YOU, TOO!
